We’ve Changed So Much, Now We Don’t Even Know Ourselves
Cell phones made our lives different from what they used to be.
There was a time when our lives were marked by stillness and simplicity, when the absence of constant connectivity allowed us to live more deeply in the present moment.
This was before cell phones when everyday interactions and the comfort of doing nothing were normal and integral to our daily existence.
To understand how much cell phones changed us, let’s take a journey back in time to explore life as it was, and then delve into how the emergence of cell phones reshaped everything.
Life Before Cellphones
It might seem hard to believe now, but there was a time not too long ago when people lived without cell phones.
I’m not talking about ancient history, like the Roman Empire or the era of British colonization in West Africa.
I’m referring to a period not more than 40 years ago. In 1984, mobile phones were a luxury that only about 1% of the global population had access to. Most people relied on landlines, letters, and face-to-face conversations to communicate. Meeting up with friends and family required planning, and people couldn’t be reached instantly like they can today.
