Lasting Happiness is Fueled By Purpose

Psychologist Martin Seligman talks about the “pleasant,” the “good,” and the “meaningful” life.

These are the different dimensions of human experiences defined by what people think can bring them happiness and fulfillment.

People who live the “pleasant life” tend to define happiness in terms of maximizing pleasures.

They equate happiness with the acquisition of material possessions and consumption. And spend money buying stuff that provides immediate gratification, such as luxury goods, entertainment, or dining out at fancy restaurants.

This type of “bought happiness,” which is happiness built on pleasures, doesn’t last. It’s often short-lived.
