It’s pretty wild — 52% of people have tried some kind of eating plan or diet in the past year.

People do it for different reasons, like losing weight, keeping their heart healthy, living longer, or managing diabetes.

But you see all these diets with their big promises and those dramatic before-and-after pictures on social media? Turns out, most of those fad diets just don’t really work in the long run.

And it can be a tough call trying to figure out which diets are safe and which ones could actually mess with your health.

Fortunately, U.S. News & World Report has published a list of the 30 best overall diets, evaluated by experts in medicine, nutrition, and public health.

They grade these diets based on how well they cover nutritional needs, what health benefits and risks they come with, how sustainable they are over time, and whether there’s solid evidence they actually work.

Guess what came out on top? The Mediterranean diet. It’s like the gold standard.

But then, on the flip side, there are three diets that got ranked at the bottom of the barrel—ones you might want to steer clear of if you’re thinking about trying a new diet.
