Loneliness is a silent epidemic, and many people are living with it.

For instance, a Gallup measure of global loneliness shows that over one in five people worldwide said they felt loneliness “a lot of the day yesterday.”

You can have hundreds of social media followers, a full contact list, and still feel like you’re stranded on an emotional island.

The worst part is that most people don’t want to admit it. They don’t talk about it because loneliness has become a secret shame, something to hide behind filtered selfies and group pictures that mask a deeper truth.

Here are some of the reasons why you’re lonely and what you can do about it.

You’re Wearing a Mask in Every Social Interaction

We live in a world where status, appearances, and image dominate social interactions. So, a lot of people pretend to be someone they’re not.

They project a version of themselves that’s more acceptable to others. They act one way at work, another way with friends, and yet another way online.

What you may not realize is that the more you wear this mask, the more disconnected you become, not only from others but from yourself.
