It’s seen as a way to drown the pain and relieve some anxiety after a hurting experience like a breakup, job loss, or other major life stress.
Alcohol slows down the central nervous system, creating feelings of relaxation. It also reduces memory and inhibits judgment. As a result, alcohol often serves as a tool to distance oneself from stressors or challenges.
But is it an effective way to cope with difficult times and relieve emotional challenges?
The Research: Alcohol Makes Matter Worse
In a new study, researchers at the University of Missouri, Columbia found that alcohol doesn’t relieve negative feelings, and people who “drink to cope” can even make their conditions worse.
The study comprised 110 participants of which 58 were from the general community and 52 had a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
