We all come to the point in our lives when we have to decide between continuing the old path we’re used to or changing course. It’s called a crossroad.
I found myself at a crossroads pretty early. I was twenty-three.
In Africa, first sons are de facto dads from a very early age, especially if you lost your dad or you’re being raised by a single mom. That fatherly role falls on you and you have to grow up really quickly to take care of your siblings and be your mom’s husband.
Most people take up that role fairly easily but some like me, don’t.
I was a kid without any sense of direction. I caused my mom pains.
I was already a sophomore. I put my studies aside. Partied. Smoked. And went after girls. My grades went South. I made many bad decisions. I got into trouble with authorities and spent some days in a cell. I was exuberant.
One day, it dawned on me that if I didn’t put my life on track, it’d be hard for me. I knew I needed to make a turn and reinvent my life.
