Self-awareness is a prized quality. It’s something we’re quick to assume we possess but rarely examine with honesty.

The truth is that many of us are far less self-aware than we think. This is because self-awareness requires being able to confront the hard truths about yourself, and most people avoid this at all costs.

Here are six often-overlooked signs of poor self-awareness, even in people who claim to know themselves well.

You Over-Explain Yourself in Conversations

Have you ever found yourself explaining your actions to people who didn’t ask for details?

This habit might seem like thoughtfulness, but it often hides insecurity about how others see you.

For instance, if someone casually asks, “Why were you late?” instead of saying, “Traffic was bad,” you dive into a long story about the route you took, the delays, and how it wasn’t your fault.

It feels like you’re being thorough, but it often signals a deeper fear of being judged or misunderstood.
