Decades of studies in psychology show that human perfection is an asymptote.

This means that we can strive to become our perfect selves, whether it’s in terms of behaviors, personality, brainpower, and reaching our fullest potential, but we truly never get there.

As Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert observed, “Human beings are a work in progress who mistakenly think they’re finished.”

Rather than reach a fixed point of perfection where all our flaws are wiped out, what each of us do is to continually work toward becoming better and better.

This can mean to become better at paying attention, communicating, listening, or working smarter.

Your best self isn’t a perfect you.

It’s not the person who makes no mistakes or go through failure. It’s not the version of you that’s devoid of negative emotions. It’s not being someone you’re not.
